Save Money on Insurance

travel insuranceYou don’t have to spend thousands on a travel insurance policy to enjoy peace of mind while on holiday. We have discovered a few clever tips and tricks to purchase the perfect policy at an affordable price.

The most obvious way to save money on travel insurance is by shopping around and doing a thorough travel insurance comparison. Get quotes from as many travel insurance agencies as you can and do a comparison based on cost, level of cover and benefits that are relevant to you. Once you have a thorough understanding of the costs of your desire policy, negotiate! Most agencies work on a commission basis, and may be able to reduce the price in order to secure the sale.

Bundling your policies can also be an effective way of saving money. This can be done two ways, through bundling all your insurance policies together, such as life, travel and home insurance, as well as through joining together travel insurance policies for family members or friends who are travelling with you. Joint policies are better value for money, as many travel insurance agencies will jointly insure two unrelated people travelling together.

The key to saving money over the long term is to never under-insure. Although some budget travel insurance policies maybe more affordable, they are likely to have much higher excess fees and can cost you more money in the long term if you ever need to make a large claim.

The final tip to save money on your travel insurance policy is to use your credit card. Many card holders are entitles to a certain level of accident and emergency cover if they pay for their trip with their credit card. This may not be sufficient cover for all travellers, so check with your card provider before departing on your adventure.

Sleeping at a German Train Station

airport sleepingIt happens to all of us, eventually. It doesn’t matter where we are traveling to, where we came from or how heavy our backpack is, or even how much money we have on our credit cards. All that matters is that sometimes, you arrive at a foreign city and the next train is at six in the morning and you have no idea where the nearest hotel is and can’t really ask anyone because everything is closed. Yeah, it happened to me too when I was in my gap year after high school and I ended up sleeping on the floor next to two hobos in Frankfurt.

This is normal in Europe though and I’ll never forget that night. I had a great conversation with two guys who were homeless and they changed my perception of homeless people forever. Afterwards, I gave them some money so they could get some food for a while and I also gave them my email address, if ever they’re in in Melbourne then they can stay at my place.

They told me all about how they had adventures too when they were kids. Growing up with the Berlin Wall and the Stasi and all that. They met in school and moved in together after – one to start a business and the other one to go and do computer science. But of course, not everything works out the way you wanted it and their parents were killed in a tragic accident, and one of them got accused of selling drugs and the other lost his job and so on and so on until they were living on the street.

In any case, the next morning at six am I left with the first train to Prague. I haven’t seen them since. My wallet was gone too but I just chuckled.

No-Fly Holiday Guide to Europe

trains no fly

A quality holiday doesn’t mean you must travel by air to get to your destination. There are many fantastic no-fly destinations within Europe and convenient to most UK residents. No airfare cuts down on costs, hassle, and even your stress level. After all, a holiday is meant to be enjoyed. Cut out the delays and extra steps associated with air travel and choose a no-fly destination.

Driving on holiday can add another benefit: a view. The picturesque scenery you pass along the way can be worth the trip alone. Cross the Bay of Biscay to Santander in Spain by ferry, then drive through the countryside to the lush area of Galicia, book yourself a Villa Holiday or book a hotel and enjoy the city life of Madrid. You could also travel to France, since most of the country is easily accessible by Eurostar and the TGV. Stay in the beautiful northern area of Normandy and take in the historic battlefields. Admire the artwork and pottery craftsmanship in Limoges on your way through. This is the ideal holiday for those travellers looking to relax and soak up nature.

On the other hand, a quick Eurostar trip from London to Paris might be just what you’re looking for. This short, two-hour jaunt opens up a whole city of culture, art, architecture, and gorgeous gardens. Experience the nightlife in the city, or travel from there to the rich, lush lands of southern France. A nice holiday relaxing on the French Riviera may be the perfect no-fly getaway for you and your family.

Wherever you decide to go, flying is not a necessary evil of European travel. Many destinations are just a quick drive or train ride away.
